1) If you wait until you feel ready you are never gonna start. You don’t need to know everything, you don’t need the perfect product, logo, brand name, studio etc. You just need to START. Start with the knowledge you have, use the equipment you own and start building from there. 2) You will make mistakes, you will waist money, you are gonna “fail”. Every “fail” brings you a step closer to better work, a better business a better you… Failure doesn’t exist unless you decide to quit. 3) Learn basic sewing and pattern making skills. These skills don’t have to be perfect in order for you to start, but knowing the basics of fabrics and garment construction is gonna safe you so much money and energy. No need to know EVERYTHING, you will learn everyday. But invest time in a solid base. 4) Stop comparing yourself with others. Sure, you should know what’s happening in the market but don’t compare yourself. Everyone’s path is different, some people have a financial head start and a family full of connections. Comparing yourself with them is useless and opens the door to a lot of negative self talk. Use your own progress as comparison… “did I improve my skills compared to last month?”, “am I selling more products compared to last week?”, “do I have a stronger network compared to last year?”. Make sure you push yourself out of your comfort zone and remain in a positive, constructive headspace. That’s where you will find progress ❤️ 5) Fashion designers often think selling clothes is the only way to make money. WRONG, think outside the box: Work with businesses, give workshops, sell digital products, make videos… there are so many ways to make money and still design fashion. It’s up to you to experiment and see what works for you and your audience. Diversifying your income will give you more creative freedom. 6) I made my first designs in my bedroom at 15years old. I build my business slowly from that bedroom for the next 14 years. A big atelier is aesthetic and fun, but when the payment becomes a burden it’s gonna slow you down. I understand not everyone has the ability to start from their bedroom or house. But my point is to make sure you invest time and effort in to setting up solid income streams first, before you invest money in the “packaging” you present it all in.
