Baby’s first taste of sweet potato: 10% eating, 90% sound effects that take three years off your life. One bite of sweet potato and suddenly your baby does an impression of a cat with a hairball. 🫠 You’ve never moved so fast in your life… I know it’s hard to see in the moment, but that was gagging. It’s one of the most normal (and terrifying-looking) parts of starting solids. Yes, even with purées. Here’s a stat that surprises most parents: studies show the choking risk with purées and finger foods is the same (BLISS). The gag reflex is actually baby’s built-in bodyguard. Its whole job is to move food forward, away from the airway. It starts out super sensitive near the front of the mouth and gradually moves back within their mouth. While gagging, you may see baby: 🔹 Cough 🔹 Make gagging or retching noises 🔹 Vomit or spit up after a big gag 🔹 Get watery eyes 🔹 Turn red in the face 🔹 Push their tongue forward in a cup shape Through all of this, baby is breathing. Some babies even have a “silent” gag with no dramatic soundtrack, but the other signs are there and they’re still not choking. I know every instinct within us says we need to intervene. But quickly sticking your finger in to fish the food out can push it deeper and cause actual choking. Your job is to stay calm, asses if there are some of the signs above, and let them work it out. 3 non-negotiables before starting solids: ✅ Learn the difference between gagging and choking (+common choking hazards) so you know when to act ✅ Take an infant CPR class ✅ Learn how to SAFELY offer foods. No guessing or googling mom-blogs. It needs to be from credible healthcare practitioners like pediatric dietitians, and SLPs who specialize in knowing how specific foods need to be modified based on your baby’s developmental stage and chewing abilities. Download BLW Meals app (link in bio) for expert-made library showing how to safely offer over 100 foods. Save this for your solids era, and send it to a friend whose baby starts solids soon. Follow along for how day 5 went. #startingsolids #babyfood #babyledweaning #babyfoodideas #babyfoodideas
