Service charges are just another way to bring the numbers on the actual menu down. It’s been around for a while but the proliferation of it has really taken over in the past few years. They usually say it’s how they pay the back of house staff better wages. But that’s not true. It doesn’t go directly to back of house. It’s just more of the same tipping culture crap.

I think the receipt just automatically print out tip. Ignore it for a zero because they’ve already added it to your bill, but you know this now hopefully you ask.

the 18% service charge is for the show. you can go to a habachi restaurant, sit at a regular dine in table, and order off the habachi menu and they will not have the service charge. source: worked in habachi restaurants. and yes that 18% does go to the chef and the extra trip would generally go to the waitress who is bringing the drinks or taking sushi orders.
