@unapologeticallyafter: When I got diagnosed, I assumed my closest friends would be the ones by my side. Instead, some of them just disappeared. The text messages stopped. The invites dried up. Later on, some of them made excuses. They said they "didn't know what to say" or "wanted to give me space." But the truth is, seeing me sick was just too uncomfortable for them. It hurt. A lot. It felt like a double blow to deal with cancer and rejection at the same time. But then, something else happened. People I barely knew showed up. People from work, or neighbors I’d only said hi to in passing, were suddenly dropping off food and checking on me every week. At first, I was bitter about the people who walked away. But now that I’m on the other side of it, I see things differently. Cancer is a brutal filter, but it works. Going through something like this leaves you with zero energy for fake small talk or one-sided relationships. You stop chasing people. You stop trying to keep everyone happy. My friend group is much smaller now than it used to be.
