![URGENT TRAVEL WARNING FOR NEPAL: The Nepal Tourism Board and Ministry of Home Affairs have issued an immediate safety advisory following severe flash flooding in the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers. The outflow of a GLOF, a Glacier Lake Outburst Flood, also known as a Jokulhlaup. This particular event at Columbia Glacier happens at least once a year, and the basin/ lake usually takes about a day and a half to drain. This is what I believe to be the peak volume flow of the lake release, last night at 9:30pm...but I'm headed out there again now...will report! And will share something of known size for scale...won't be a banana, but maybe a helicopter There's no infrastructure affected here, so these events mostly go unnoticed. That's very different from the recurring GLOF events in Juneau, where flooding along the Mendenhall River can impact homes and people in the Mendenhall Valley. Significant mitigation efforts have been put in place there to help reduce the damage. But even when you understand what's happening and know it's coming, watching that much water suddenly find its way out from beneath a glacier is impressive.
