Or why one paper might have a much lower grade boundary than another? 👀 Grade boundaries are not simply decided before students sit the exam. After the exams have been completed and marked, awarding organisations look carefully at the overall evidence before final grade boundaries are set. This is important because not every exam paper has exactly the same level of difficulty. If a paper turns out to be particularly challenging, students across the country may achieve fewer marks overall. The grade boundaries can therefore be lower to make sure students are not unfairly disadvantaged by a more difficult paper. On the other hand, if a paper is more accessible and students generally perform better, the grade boundaries may be higher. So if you walked out of your GCSE Science exam thinking… “WHAT was that paper?! 😭” …a difficult paper doesn’t automatically mean you’ve received a bad grade. And remember: you don’t need 90% to get a Grade 9! The number of marks needed depends on the subject, exam board, tier and that particular exam series. With GCSE Results Day approaching, try not to spend hours predicting your grade from unofficial mark schemes and previous grade boundaries.
