im ngl for all the meat eaters out there Id like to explain my stance fundamentally like my stance is based on the biology of sentience animals possess nervous systems capable of nociception pain processing learning memory and behavioural responses to aversive stimuli and theres extensive research supporting sentience across different animal taxa particularly mammals birds and fish some studies i wanna cite from memory are Birch et al and the 2024 New York Declaration on Animal Consciousness which both recognise substantial evidence for conscious experience beyond humans so tbh i dont see species membership alone as enough of a justification for disregarding an individuals interests but at the same time i will never conflate those who arent vegan with inherently bad people because i think theres a distinction between disagreeing with someones moral framework and condemning their entire character that being said i do struggle with the idea of saying you love animals while also willingly participating in their exploitation for food because to me those two positions create a pretty obvious moral inconsistency if you genuinely recognise animals as individuals capable of suffering and claim to care about their wellbeing then i dont think its unreasonable to question how that claim is compatible with intentionally contributing to their suffering and death when theres no necessity to do so i understand that people can care about animals in an emotional sense while still eating them but i think theres a difference between loving individual animals and extending that concern consistently to animals as a whole.
