fun fact: odds are you know at least one person who has been sexually assaulted, and there's a chance that out of aaaaaall of the people you know, they're the one you'd be the least suspecting of something like that happening to (so I guess this fact is actually the exact opposite of fun.) when you tell a survivor of sexual assault that it is, or was, their duty to go to the police with what happened, it feels exactly like when you say,
fun fact: odds are you know at least one person who has been sexually assaulted, and there's a chance that out of aaaaaall of the people you know, they're the one you'd be the least suspecting of something like that happening to (so I guess this fact is actually the exact opposite of fun.) when you tell a survivor of sexual assault that it is, or was, their duty to go to the police with what happened, it feels exactly like when you say, "well, maybe you shouldn't have been wearing such a short skirt" or "that's what happens when you get too drunk..." those are both ways of you blaming the victim of a horrible, disgusting thing that was done to them. 1 in 3 report to the police - and the number is closer to 1 in 15 for black women, which is a heartbreaking reminder that they're taken even less seriously, believed less often, and are so much less respected when it comes to... well, everything out of 1000 assaults, 50 lead to arrests, and 28 lead to felony convictions 73% of survivors say that going to the police worsened their mental health 98% of perpetrators are never held fully accountable by the criminal justice system some of those perpetrators actually get the opposite of convicted! some of them become things like the president. some of them are billionaires while so many victims are homeless on the street and looked at as wretched, hopeless dregs of society. many of them purposely choose victims who are underage and nobody does a single thing to stop them. many of them have hundreds of victims, and the victims who have gone to law enforcement and all sorts of other places where they thought they might get some sort of help, are ignored and dismissed very publicly every time. believe survivors. support survivors. listen to survivors. show compassion for survivors. 🩵 if you don't have something that may be of actual help like... 🩷 solid proof that you could help bring the one who assaulted them to justice 💛 showing that you actually care about them and want to help and listen to them without judgement 💚 knowledge about ways to help them heal - whether it's a book, a documentary, a support group, etc. 🩵 or having any other form of support that you can give them that doesn't involve rude questions, bringing up the things they hate about themselves most, or reminding them that they are somehow to blame for what happened to them then please, stay silent, just like so many of them feel forced to do. the stigmatization around sexual assault makes it so many people never talk about it, even if talking about it is the only thing that will help them begin to heal. we already feel disgusting. we already feel broken. we already feel guilt that you could never even imagine. we don't need you reminding us of the things you think we did wrong that led to this, or the things we did wrong after it happened. and if you are a survivor of sexual assault, please remember: 🌈 you are not broken 🌞 you are not tainted 🍄 you are not to blame 🐸 it was not your fault 🍰 I see you 🌸 I love you 🍓I respect you 🐝 you. are. not. alone. and if you tell somebody, tell everybody, or tell nobody, that is okay. you aren't wrong for choosing how to handle what happened to you. all I can say about how you choose to recover is: please try to avoid doing anything that is self destructive, but unfortunately, I'm not the person to give advice about that kind of thing. ❤️‍🩹 #sexualassaultawareness #sa #sexualabuse #survivor #fyp
