Lena had been in love with Miu since the first day they worked together. It had happened embarrassingly fast. One laugh across the office, one bright smile when Miu introduced herself, and Lena had been done for. Six months later, absolutely nothing had changed. Except now Lena knew exactly how Miu took her coffee, which days she usually brought lunch from home, what songs she hummed when she was concentrating, and how she always tucked her hair behind one ear when she was reading something. What Lena did not know was how to ask her out. She had tried. Five times in fact. The first attempt had taken an entire evening of preparation. Lena had stood in front of her bathroom mirror with a toothbrush in one hand and practised until the words sounded natural. ‘Would you like to have dinner with me?’ Too formal. ‘Do you want to get dinner sometime?’ Too casual. ‘Would you maybe want to go out with me?’ Too nervous. By the time she left for work the next morning, she had settled on the first one. Simple. Clear. Adult. Polite. She repeated it twice in the car. Then again in the lift. By eleven, she finally saw her chance. Miu was standing at the end of the corridor alone, checking something on her phone. Lena stood from her desk before she could lose her nerve and walked towards her. “Miu?” Miu looked up and smiled. That smile almost had Lena completely forgetting how to stay stood up straight. “Hey.” “Hi. I wanted to ask if you would like to…” “MIU!” Their assistant manager came rushing around the corner so quickly Lena actually stepped back. “We've got a problem downstairs.” Miu's eyes widened. “What happened?” “Client issue. They need you now.” Miu looked apologetically at Lena. “I’m sorry, Lena. What were you saying?” Lena stared at her. “Nothing.” “You sure?” “Yep, all good here.” Lena tries to put on her best smile. Miu opened her mouth to speak again but was already being pulled away. Attempt one was dead. Attempt two went considerably worse. A week later, Lena found herself alone with Miu in the break room. Miu was leaning against the counter complaining about the heat and Lena decided this was perfect. Casual. No pressure at all. She could simply ask whether Miu wanted to go and watch the meteor shower that weekend. Romantic without technically being romantic. That is unless Miu wanted it to be romantic. Which Lena desperately hoped she did. Lena stepped closer to Miu. “So, Saturday night…” Miu turned, her elbow hit the iced coffee that was in Lena’s hand The entire drink tipped straight down the front of Lena's blouse. Both women froze. “Oh my God.” Lena looked down. Coffee dripped from her shirt onto the floor. Miu grabbed napkins. “I am so sorry.” “No, it's fine.” “It is not fine.” “It'll wash.” “There is coffee in your bra.” Lena closed her eyes. This was not how she'd imagined the conversation going. Miu was trying very hard not to laugh while blotting at Lena's sleeve. Eventually Lena started laughing too. The meteor shower was never mentioned. Attempt three lasted approximately seven seconds. They were eating lunch in the cafeteria when Lena finally decided she was tired of making everything complicated. She would just ask…no rehearsing…no perfect moment. Lena put her spoon down and cleared her throat. “Miu, can I ask you something?” Miu looked up from her food. “Of course.” Lena took a breath just as Miu's phone rang. She glanced at the screen. “My mum. One second.” Lena nodded. Miu answered. The voice on the other end was so loud Lena could hear it from across the table. “Miu! Have you eaten? You sound tired. Are you sleeping enough? Why haven't you called me?” Miu pulled the phone slightly away from her ear. Lena bit the inside of her cheek to stop herself laughing. The conversation continued for almost fifteen minutes. By the time Miu finally hung up, their lunch break was over and being rushed back to the conference room.
