This is a scene from the movie Sarafina which was released in 1992 just two years before South Africa attained its independence. Most people thought that independence would bring about economic prosperity for the majority of blacks people who had been brutalized, killed, tortured, oppressed during colonialism and as well as apartheid. Sadly not much has changed since most African countries attained independence and today the same so called political parties who negotiated our independence are using the same tactics and laws that were used by the colonizers to suppress our rights. This scene is now familiar to most young people here in Namibia who attend the China Town Protest, this scene is also familiar to those who attend the Shoprite Protest in Walvis Bay, this scene is also familiar to those who witnessed the City of Windhoek workers protest and this scene is even more familiar to those who attended the High Unemployment Protest on the 21st March 2023. I urge everyone who has not yet watched the movie Sarafina to do so, you can only know where you are going if you understand your past. It must be understood that the project of liberation is incomplete without Economic Emancipation. The liberators have turned into oppressors. This is a clarion call to all economic freedom fighters that it is our duty to educate ourselves if we are to lead our people to Economic Freedom in our lifetime.
