The next morning, Winter walked into class expecting peace. Instead, she was greeted by Karina dramatically throwing herself onto the empty seat beside her. “Good morning to me, I guess.” Winter didn’t look up from her notebook. “You look happy.” “I am happy.” A pause. “…I think.” That got Winter’s attention. Karina was staring at her phone. Specifically, at a message from her boyfriend. “What happened?” Karina turned the screen around. bf 🤍 what’s your favorite drink again? Winter blinked. Karina blinked back. Then both of them burst out laughing. “That’s bad.” “I know!” Winter shook her head. “Three months.” “What?” “You’ve been dating for three months.” Karina covered her face with her hands. “Don’t remind me.” Winter laughed, but something about it felt wrong. Because part of her wasn’t surprised. — The rest of the day went normally. Until lunch. Karina sat across from Winter, poking at her food. “Can I ask you something?” Winter nodded. “What’s my favorite drink?” Winter answered immediately. “Strawberry milk.” “Favorite color?” “Blue.” “Favorite season?” “Winter.” Karina grinned. “Favorite movie?” “‘Little Women.’” “Favorite flower?” Winter rolled her eyes. “Lilies.” Karina pointed at her dramatically. “See?!” The girls at the next table stared. Winter wanted to disappear. Karina, unfortunately, looked delighted. “You know everything about me.” “It’s not that impressive.” “It is.” “No.” “It is.” Winter kicked her under the table. Karina laughed. And for a second, Winter forgot why this hurt. — That night, Karina called her. Which wasn’t unusual. The problem was that she sounded upset. “What happened?” Karina was quiet. Then— “We had a fight.” Winter sat up. “About what?” Another silence. “Nothing.” Karina laughed weakly. “That’s the problem.” Winter didn’t understand. “What do you mean?” Karina sighed. “I don’t know.” She paused. “Sometimes it feels like we’re dating because we’re supposed to be.” Winter’s chest tightened. “And?” “And talking to him feels hard.” Winter looked down. The last thing she wanted was to hope. But hope was already there. Small. Dangerous. Growing. Meanwhile, Karina continued. “But talking to you is easy.” Winter closed her eyes. Because Karina had no idea what those words did to her. No idea that Winter had spent years pretending her heart didn’t race whenever Karina smiled at her. No idea that every time she said “best friend,” Winter had to swallow the urge to ask for more. No idea that Winter would choose her every single time. Even if Karina never chose her back. “Winter?” “Hm?” “Thank you.” “For what?” Karina smiled softly through the phone. “For always remembering.” And Winter hated how much that meant to her. ALWAYS! #au #winrina #theoneyoulove #foryou #viral
