Jan never went anywhere without her camera. Ever since high school, when she first talked about becoming a professional photographer, Jingjing had been her biggest supporter. She was the one who cheered for Jan when she landed small local gigs, and she was the one who sat endlessly for her while Jan practiced her lighting and angles. If you took the memory card out of Jan’s camera and checked the files, almost every single shot was Jingjing. Jingjing smiling over a cup of cheap coffee. Jingjing laughing with her eyes crinkled shut under the streetlights. Jingjing leaning against a sunlit window, looking soft and beautiful. She was Jan's muse, her safety net, and her favorite subject. Every shutter click felt like a quiet promise that they were going to make it together. Eventually, Jan’s hard work started paying off. The endless grinding led to bigger clients, better pay, and real recognition. She was finally living the dream she had talked about for years. On a bright Saturday afternoon, Jan arrived early at a high-end garden venue for a major wedding job. The setup was breathtaking—blooming white roses, vintage wooden benches, and soft sunlight filtering through the trees. It was exactly the kind of high-profile event Jan loved to shoot. She raised her camera, looking through the viewfinder to test her framing. Click. She took a few shots of the empty aisle, double-checking her light settings. At the far end of the garden, the heavy wooden doors creaked open. The wedding coordinator waved at Jan, signaling that the bride was ready for her solo portraits before the ceremony began. Jan lifted her camera back to her eye, professional instinct taking over. "Whenever you're ready, just step slowly into the light," she called out, adjusting the focus ring. A figure in a flowing lace dress stepped into the frame. Jan dialed in the sharpness, bringing the bride's face into crystal-clear view. Jan's heart slammed against her ribs. Her breath caught, and her fingers instantly went numb on the grip. It was Jingjing. She looked stunning. Her hair was swept up softly, a delicate veil trailing behind her as she held a bouquet of white lilies. But as Jingjing looked up and caught sight of the woman holding the lens, her steps completely locked. The gentle, nervous smile on her face vanished into utter shock. "Jan?" Jingjing whispered, her voice barely carrying over the quiet breeze. Jan slowly lowered the camera. The distant chatter of guests, the rustling leaves, and the soft background music all faded into suffocating noise. The truth hung between them like a physical wall. They hadn't spoken in three years—not since the quiet, heavy night they drifted apart and chose separate paths. Jan had locked those memories away, content to leave Jingjing as a beautiful chapter of her past. Now, here she was, fully dressed to walk down the aisle to a groom waiting at the altar. Jan looked down at the tiny screen on the back of her camera. The fresh image of Jingjing in a wedding gown was frozen there. In an instant, Jan’s mind flashed back to the thousands of hidden photos on her USB back home. "You look... beautiful, Jing," Jan said softly, her voice straining to hold back years of buried feelings. Jingjing swallowed hard, eyes glittering with unshed tears. She forced a tiny, heartbreaking smile and nodded. "Thank you, Jan." Jan took a slow, quiet breath, raised the heavy lens back to her eye, and looked at her first love through the glass one final time. "Alright," Jan whispered, her finger touching the button. "Let's get your picture." #janjingjingau #janjingjing #jingjingyu #janhae #AU
