At first light in South Sudan, before the sun fully stretches across the cattle camp, a young Mundari boy kneels quietly on the cool earth. In his hands, he holds a wooden peg and a wooden hammer — simple tools shaped by tradition and daily use. Last night, one stubborn cow pulled its peg loose. It happens. In the darkness, a restless tug… a sudden pull… and by morning the peg lies tilted or completely uprooted from the ground. So the boy kneels down. Carefully, he positions the peg back into the soil. Then he begins. Thud. Thud. Thud. The sound of wood striking wood carries gently through the morning air. He hits it harder this time, driving it deeper into the earth, making sure it will hold firm through the night. For the Mundari, a peg is not just a piece of wood. It is a place of belonging. Each cow has its own peg — its own spot, its own “bed.” When the herd returns from grazing, dust rising behind them in golden light, something remarkable happens. Without confusion, without being led, each cow walks straight to its peg and stands there calmly. No one directs it. It knows. That peg is home. The cow stands on its spot until the rope is brought out. The rope is gently placed around its neck and tied securely to its peg. And there it sleeps. This simple moment — a boy kneeling in the earth, strengthening a peg with a wooden hammer — carries generations of knowledge. It speaks of responsibility learned young. Of care. Of rhythm. Of a life where even cattle understand order and belonging. In the cattle camps of South Sudan, nothing is random. Every peg has meaning. Every strike protects the herd. And every morning begins with quiet dedication. #TiangSafaris #Mundari #SouthSudan #CattleCampLife #PastoralCulture
