Gregory Lawless, 54, woke at 2:50am to find his portable air conditioning unit engulfed in flames at the top of the stairs. He shouted “fire” before somehow dragging the heavy machine down the stairs and onto the driveway. Moments later, as he grabbed a hose to tackle the flames, the air conditioner exploded. His wife Ainsley called it a “miracle” that nobody was hurt and said firefighters told the family that if the compressor had exploded inside, they could have lost the top floor of their home.
