It was only after it had to receive daily IV fluids, oxygen therapy, and medication, while its small body endured so much pain, that I truly understood: oral health problems are never “minor issues.” Tartar does not go away on its own. Bad breath, plaque, and swollen gums are not just surface problems. They can allow bacteria to enter the body over time and affect the heart, kidneys, and other organs. By the time a pet starts refusing food, becomes weak, loses weight, or sleeps all the time, the best time for treatment is often already gone. I used to think it was just getting older, or only feeling unwell sometimes, but I never realized it had been silently enduring pain all along. It spent its life by my side, comforting me and healing me, yet through my repeated negligence, I failed to protect it in time. If you have a pet, please take their oral health seriously. Check their teeth regularly, clean tartar promptly, and do not wait until they are in too much pain to eat or too sick to keep going before regretting that you noticed too late.
