Apparently you should NEVER cross your feet on defense in basketball and this poor unc is going viral for teaching cross stepping technique as opposed to sliding…but instead of going for the easy viral play and dogpiling on him…allow me to play devil’s advocate because basketball (specifically the education space) is rife with conflicting misinformation and it’s primarily because the space is saturated with former high level hoopers and elite athletes that have succeeded in the sport, but have never once been forced to audit their own methods or line of thinking due to their success. I would never discredit the skill or talent of former high level hoopers, but I do believe that, in reality, you could tell an elite athlete or generational talent anything and they’d still have a high chance of succeeding on pure genetics and inherent talent alone. That doesn’t necessarily mean the advice worked. This is why you get elite players telling people to do this and that, when they themselves, don’t even do those things. They just regurgitate what they’ve been told and their resumes back their claims and so the masses believe it without question. Then the cycle continues for generations. There is a reason why so many old basketball tips have been debunked over the years. Society will just always be lagging when it comes to mass adoption of new information, methods, and techniques. However, if I had listened to all that advice without question and never deployed my own critical thinking to these tips and tricks, I most certainly would have never gotten to the level I’m at today (which is still buns, but far exceeds the expectation of someone who only started hooping at 21 years old). So perhaps there might be some merit to challenging the norms or ideas you’ve held to be true without question. IMO: Good defense means trying hard and making the ball handler uncomfortable, which is going to be correlated with a higher % of “getting got”. But it’s all about recovery. If you make someone go to a 4th counter and take a tough shot…that’s good defense. You did your job. If they make the shot, that’s just better offense. The game was designed to heavily favor the offense. I would argue good defense requires all types of footwork based on the situation. Only sliding and shuffling and NEVER crossing your feet is just advice that doesn’t work in real life. Always take advice with a metric duck ton of salt and do your own research. Consume information from a variety of sources. Form your own opinions. Don’t place too much weight on resumes or accolades. Don’t punch down on others. Always be learning. Be open to changing your mind without it affecting your self worth. Have Fun. Duck Around & Find Out. #basketball #NBA #sports #viral #basketballtraining
