@bluetsunami2026: Shakespeare in the Park is one of those annual NYC Summer musts like a ferry to Fire Island or a picnic on Governor's Island, and since this event is free, and free is for me, that makes it even bettah! The Delacorte Theater earlier this Summer housed a production of Romeo & Juliet which got mixed reviews but I personally very much enjoyed. This time around when I heard that an epic play starring the one and only Raul Esparza was popping up, I got on that lottery line and waited and waited and waited…ok, well I lucked out and got my name chosen digitally, but it seemed like a long wait. And boy was it worth the wait! Raul Esparza as Leontes, Lily Rabe as Hermione, Marsha Stephanie Blake as Paulina and Steven Skybell as Antigonus and Autolycus in this epic take on The Winter’s Tale was bonkaz!! I’ll be honest, I’m not a big Shakespeare guy, I’ll take if it’s for free but it’s not in the realm of having the Max Martin catalogue behind it, I probably won’t pay for it. But I’ll admit that the director Daniel Sullivan’s production had me from the beginning of this mysterious romance of a story of jealousy, exile, lost children, time, repentance, and a final act of almost impossible forgiveness. I have to get back to the main draw for me which was and is Raul Esparza. This man is a 4 time Tony nominee and is best known as Bobby from Company. If you don’t know who he is, please spotify his rendition of “Being Alive,” cuz it will bring you alive y’all! I won’t get into the whole play cuz I’m not a reviewer but all I will say is that Raul nails Leontes and you can’t draw your eyes off of him the whole time. If you’re not a fan of Shakespeare, this might be the production that converts you.
