One thing I’ve learned over the years is that everyone seems to have an opinion about how I should do my daughter hair. Use this product. Cut it. Spank her. You’re doing too much. You’re not doing enough. The reality is that I am not crown sourcing advice for my child from people who have never met her, don’t understand her communication, sensory needs or will never care for her more than me. This isn’t just a hair style. You are seeing YEARS of learning, trial and error and building trusta and understanding. It’s not just about getting her hair done the “right way” with the “right tools” For us it means breaks, accommodations and methods that may look unusual from someone on the outside looking in. Our goal was never to make the process look “normal” it has always been about making it accessible to her based on her needs. Not ever strategy is going to look comfortable, familiar or necessary to everyone. As parents of Autistic children, we often spend years becoming students of our children, learning triggers, strengths, communication styles and so on to help them feel safe. So while appreciate that many comments come from a place of good intention, I trust the expertise that has come from raising my children every single day. #autism #haircare #asd #motherhood #sensoryissues
