@thrillernightheehee: this is english spoken with a jamaican accent. NOT PATOIS!!! the jamaican accent fills me with positive energy 💚💛 that distinction matters more here than on any accent i’ve done. jamaica has two things and they are not the same kind of thing. patois is a language-an english-lexifier creole with its own grammar, where “mi a go a shop” isn’t english pronounced differently, it’s a different sentence. i am not attempting that. jamaican english is english, with jamaican sounds. that’s this. the jamaican accent is truly one of a kind cos the english that arrived here in the 1600s wasn’t standard english, it was sailors and indentured labourers from the west midlands, liverpool, scotland and ireland, with irish settlers alone estimated at up to 40% of arrivals by 1670. then from the 1660s west africans arrived in enormous numbers, over 100,000 by 1700, bringing akan, igbo and yoruba. so it isn’t posh english meeting one other language. it’s regional british english meeting several west african ones, fast and large-scale. what survived from africa is the part people hear without being able to name it: the syllable-timed rhythm, every syllable carrying equal weight instead of english’s stressed-and-swallowed pattern. that’s why it sounds musical :) the beat is even. the vowel architecture is different too. jamaican builds from three core vowels - i, a and u - combining into longer and complex forms, rather than english’s dozen-odd separate ones. that’s why name comes out “niem” and sounds like nothing in britain or america. and then something rare happened. most colonial englishes settled into one variety. jamaica ended up with a continuum, a genuine sliding scale from jamaican english to deep patois, with most speakers moving along it depending on who they’re talking to. this text sits at the english end. on the sounds: the oxford english dictionary’s own caribbean model contains 22 consonants, identical to british english minus the dental fricatives, which is why the is “di” and mother is “madda”. the voiced one is the stronger of the two, so “di” and “dem” are better attested than “tree”. and t and d drop out of final clusters when the consonant before them shares the same voicing - that’s why asked is “ask” and child is “chail”. alison irvine-sobers, whose open-access book on the jamaican standard is the best thing written on this, found that it isn’t using english forms in general that marks someone as speaking the standard. it’s a handful of specific sounds carrying all the social weight. she calls them load-bearing variables. get those and you’re placed instantly. how to do it: th becomes d — the → di, them → dem, mother → madda, without → widout. drop the r at the end of a word — answer → an-sa, her → har, for → faa. cut the last consonant off a cluster — asked → ask, laughed → laaf, child → chail. no “uh” sounds. schwas are rare here, so every vowel keeps a full value. face words open out — name → niem. keep this one light; speakers at this end of the continuum mostly use plain vowels. even weight on every syllable. that rhythm does more work than any single sound. DISCLAIMER ‼️‼️ accent features are probabilistic so speakers use them sometimes. they come and go depending on the word, the speed at which they’re speaking and they fade the more english someone speaks. a written respelling can only show a sound as on or off, so it always looks tidier than a real person. this is the strong version, which does not mean that it’s the only version! i’m not mocking any accents, i simply enjoy sharing my love for accents and lingos with you. if i’ve made a mistake, feel free to correct me :) #jamaicatiktok #learnontiktok #communication #accentchallenge #pronunciation
