Saint Agatha has been solemnly crowned in Catania, Sicily, by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Pontifical Legate of Pope Leo XIV, as the city marks 900 years since the return of her relics. On August 17, 1126, the relics of the third-century virgin and martyr were brought back to Catania from Constantinople. Nine centuries later, thousands gathered for a 7.5 km pilgrimage through the city to Piazza Duomo. Her skull was presented to the faithful before being placed inside her magnificent reliquary bust, while her other relics were returned to a silver reliquary casket. Cardinal Parolin then carried out the solemn coronation of Catania's patroness. But this raises a serious question: 🤔 If Africans performed a similar coronation and veneration of a revered traditional figure, would it be described as culture and tradition—or immediately labelled “idol worship”?
