I know this is a controversial topic, and it’s one that has been discussed a lot recently — including by some very large creators who have found themselves in similar situations. As someone who has actually had to make these decisions, I think the conversation is far more nuanced than “I’d give him the child” or “I’d take the child.” A child isn’t a prize to be won or something to hand over to make a point. The question should be: who is best placed to give that child the most stable, loving and secure life — emotionally, practically and financially? Sometimes that will be the mother. Sometimes the father. Sometimes it will mean genuinely shared parenting. And the truth is, none of us really know how we will feel until we are actually standing in that position ourselves. Most people don’t bring a child into the world expecting to become a single parent. Hindsight is easy, and people may have opinions about the sacrifices I have made, but when I had to make those decisions, I wasn’t thinking about what would make my own life easiest. I was thinking: what is best for my child? I’m fortunate that in my situation, I am able to fully provide for my son and I believe being with me is what is best for him. Parenthood sometimes means accepting that what we personally want and what is best for our child may not always be exactly the same thing. That’s why I struggle with blanket statements around custody. Every family is different, and children deserve more nuance than social media arguments usually allow. #singlemum #custody #divorce #parent
