Marcos Jr. on Friday, June 5, inspected the ongoing rehabilitation of a major section of the Maharlika Highway in Samar, a project expected to reduce travel time between Tacloban City and Catbalogan City from about three hours to just one hour and 45 minutes once completed in August this year. Accompanied by Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon, the President visited the project site in Pinabacdao town where he was welcomed by Mayor Viannery Dy Mabag and local officials. During the inspection, Marcos said the government is ensuring that the rehabilitation works meet quality standards and are completed on schedule, noting the project's importance in improving mobility, connectivity, and economic activity in Eastern Visayas. The rehabilitation project covers a portion of the Maharlika Highway, also known as the Pan-Philippine Highway, the country's primary land transport corridor linking Luzon, Samar, Leyte, and Mindanao. The highway serves as a vital route for passenger travel, trade, agriculture, tourism, and government services in the region. Marcos told reporters that the improved highway would facilitate faster movement of people and goods, lower transportation costs, and create more economic opportunities for communities along the corridor. The project is also expected to improve logistics for farmers, fisherfolk, and businesses while providing easier access to schools, hospitals, government offices, and other essential services.
