If you already know sorority life may be a big part of your college experience, don’t wait until after you commit to learn how Greek life actually works on campus! These are five questions I’d ask while you’re touring and comparing schools: 1️⃣ Does living in a sorority house matter to me? What is the housing setup actually like? Some campuses have multimillion dollar sorority mansions. Others have Greek villages or residential sorority dorms. Some don’t have any type of traditional sorority housing at all. If living with your chapter is something you picture as part of college, find out what each school offers. Ask about chapter houses, shared rooms, sleeping porches, meal plans, bathrooms, and how many members live in (and what years). Those details can make the chapter-house experience VERY different from school to school. 💕 2️⃣ Would I feel comfortable here if I didn’t go Greek? At some schools, Greek life plays a huge role in the social scene. At others, it’s only one of many ways students find community. Think about how important that is to you. 3️⃣ Do I want to pick my roommate freshman year or am I okay with moving into the sorority house right after bid day? At some schools and chapters, members are expected to live in the house during a certain year, if not immediately after bid day. Think about whether you’d rather choose your own roommate and housing or whether chapter living sounds exciting to you. 4️⃣ What are the average dues/ financial expectations for Greek life? Visit your school’s Panhellenic website to assess dues, housing, meal plans, new member fees, and other chapter expenses. Membership is a financial commitment, and it’s important to get the full picture prior to joining. It can vary a TON between each school and chapter, so if this is important to you, definitely ask about it! 5️⃣ Do I want to rush in the fall or spring? Some schools hold primary recruitment before classes start or early in the fall. Others recruit in the spring. Think about whether you’d rather jump into sorority life right away or have a semester to settle into college first. ✨ Greek life shouldn’t be the only factor in your college decision, but if it matters to you, it deserves to be part of the convo. In high school and want help preparing long before you arrive on campus? Join Hiking in Heels’ Insider Pass! It’s our monthly membership with insider strategies, networking guidance, templates, checklists, and behind-the-scenes tips for future PNMs. You don’t want to miss out on this month’s drop!
