another hot take, but we need to bring back holding kids back a year if they’re not ready for the next grade…. why are we setting children up for failure?

Super hot take: some “bullying” from peers was actually more helpful, being shamed by your peers is what can drive children to try harder

I have a third grader who reads 6 words a minute. She can’t read the word “him.” I also have students who read 150+ words per minute. How am I supposed to have a functioning class that supports both of their needs?? We need to group by ability!

The amount of parents that don’t enforce reading anymore scares me. If you read enough, it becomes easy. And learning becomes easy.

and there’s no shame anymore. these kids (and adults) aren’t ashamed of their stupidity 😭

And adults’ refusal to tell kids they’re stupid is actually just those adults falling victim to this literacy crisis too. Their refusal is based on the fact that they cannot word negative things in a polite way. They do not know how to say “you’re not meeting the standards and it’s negatively impacting your academics and life”; they can only comprehend “you’re stupid”. Their own lack of knowledge is preventing them from helping others, but since they never address their own problems, the cycle just loops.

College English professor here. Every semester I ask the students what their favorite thing they’ve ever read was… this was the first semester at least 50% of my classes said: “I don’t read”

I once threw shade at my 10yr old nephew by saying "how many chapter books have you read" and kinda looks embarrassed as he said "none" and I, without thinking, say, "well that's embarrassing, when I was 10 I was buying chapter books every week and finishing them in days". BUT to be fair, he's started reading chapter books and now graphic novels too

Have you seen the video that a parent shared of the “workbook” they had to pay $10 for?! Was created by Ai and the map of the states is unfortunately hilariously incorrect. 😭

why does correcting the spelling of fellow adults come off as such an insult to them? i do it with the same patience and understanding when correcting a child irl, but it’s like a huge social faux pas and i hate it

I was diagnosed in the 90s with ADD and dyslexia. I cried to my dad that school work was harder for me than everyone else. He said "Then you have to work harder than everyone else." Today, people just dumb down the assignment instead

i found out the other day that kids aren’t held back in school anymore. and hey i literally don’t understand who thought that was a good idea, so do kids just pass no matter what? they’re not able to read in 4th grade but…. they’re passing? what does that tell them
