Hannah is a mathematician, not an astronomer, or a scientist. She has gotten a ton of scientific stuff wrong on her podcast with vsauce.

there were about 50 lunar eclipses visible from Jerusalem between 1 and 33 CE. this would not have been seen as a particularly unusual event.

Fry tends to get historical stuff wrong while acting very confident. That's ultimately not good science communication. Recently she claimed the church fathers "hated curiosity" because she didn't think to check if latin "curiositas" actually meant the same thing as English "curiosity". That was rather embarrassing.

It's always interesting to me how religious folks get so excited when they think they can use science (the the thing they despise) to "prove" something from the bible. It's almost as if they fully understand the value of the scientific method in the determination of credibility.

For the sake of precision: NASA has not much to do with it. As a matter of fact, Roger Bacon in the 13th century had already calculated that a lunar eclipse happened on April 3, 33 CE. Indeed Bacon was trying to find a Friday with a full moon to agree with the Gospels. The traditional date of March 25 never satisfied these conditions (falling on a Friday with a full moon); for instance, what came to be accepted as the canonical date for the crucifixion, March 25, 34 CE, was a Thursday and the moon had been full on the 23rd. Bacon made detailed calculations to prove that Albertus Magnus, who claimed that March 25, 34 CE was a Friday and a full moon, was in fact wrong.

More importantly and consequentially, there’s little evidence and only low assurance that years have been accurately tracked and accounted for since the supposed time of the death of Jesus. So any retroactive calculation of eclipses having an overlap with an event during the time of Jesus assumes all years since then were accurately tracked, which they weren’t.

Ah well at least she’s more interested about Eclipses and less about the Bible’s inerrancy.

Great again Dan. Saw Hannahs video a bit ago and remember my dissappointment that when she mentioned Peters prophecy and then said there was no solar eclipse but there was a lunar eclipse really, didn't really catch my fantasy. That it wasn't a total lunar eclipse certainly devastates the whole thought. Ancient peoples have certainly stood in awe of natural phenomonem through the ages but I think we have to refrain from putting words or thoughts into their heads without proper documentation to the contrary!

You can often get dark red or amber “blood moon” without an eclipse when the sunlight is bent through the atmosphere, which means the moon is lower on the horizon and will fade back to normal as it rises. Almost like a near miss eclipse

No argument this time disputing that the year asserted for the crucifixion is also most probably incorrect as well? That's been an added point of contention in previous videos on this topic.
