@son.of.rum: Homer and the Ethnogenesis of the Greeks: Homer's works of the Iliad and the Odyssey were instrumental to the shaping of the classical Greek identity. The common struggle of the city states and the Hellenes as a collective against the Trojans, in combination with Odysseus' struggle for his return (Nóstos), against all odds and reason, acted as what historians call the foundation of the Hellenic Paligènesia, meaning the shared spirit of struggle and perseverance for the survival and regeneration of the nation. Those two attributes were the primary factors for the creation of a shared "Mythos" and "Pathos" for the Hellenes. Plato and the ancient Hellenes, 4 centuries after Homer, regarded him as "the educator of all Greeks" (Plato's Republic, chapter X, page 606e-607a), thus solidifying his contribution to the Ethos and the Logos of the Ancient Hellenic Civilization. Those four characteristics, Logos, Ethos, Pathos, according to Aristotle (Techne Rhetorike, Book I,Chapter 2 Chapter) and later on Mythos, according to modern scholars, are the requirements for the formation of a common culture, identity, and thus civilization. The very culture and civilization that gave birth to western civilization as we know it. The foundation of our traditional way of life.
