@byissanadeem: In Japan, asking "is this halal?" usually gets you nowhere. Not because people are unhelpful — most just don't know the word. Halal isn't part of everyday vocabulary here, so the question lands as confusion, and confusion turns into a guess. A guess is worse than no answer. So I stopped asking about halal. I ask about ingredients instead — because that's a question they can actually answer. ゼラチンは入っていますか？ — does it contain gelatin? 豚肉は入っていますか？ — does it contain pork? アルコールは入っていますか？ — does it contain alcohol? みりんは入っていますか？ — does it contain mirin? And when they're not sure: 原材料を見せてもらえますか？ — could you show me the ingredients list? That last one solves more than the others combined. Nobody has to know anything — you just read it yourself. To be clear: these questions do not guarantee something is halal. Pork broth, lard, cooking wine, shared fryers, dashi — there's plenty they won't catch.
