And look at what gentle parenting has led to kids don’t respect authority and believe they won’t have any consequences

I think this works for some kids but not all. My sister does not punish or discipline or hand down any kind of consequences to her children. My 12 y/o niece is amazing, she’s so smart and sweet and cool. My 7 y/o nephew with special needs treats my sister like a slave, a dog, the lowest life form he’s ever known. He doesn’t respect her feelings or her peace at all. It brings me nearly to tears as I watch this unfold in front of me when they visit every year. I wasn’t the best mom, I don’t like to judge other moms, and I’m sure her kids will be amazing, perfectly well adjusted adults. But her son scares me bc once he’s an adult, is he going to treat other women in his life that way? Is he going to be more likely not to take no for an answer since he never has? I mean what if she’s raising him to be a literal grapist? I’m sure it’ll be fine. But I can’t help but be a little worried though just seeing how low he seems to view his own mother who bends over backwards to please him every hour of the day. It’s mostly just her that he treats that way. No one else is allowed to do anything for him so no one else gets his wrath. He will only have his mom do things for him, even if she’s got her hands completely full or is trying to finally relax for a moment, even if his dad or other adults are available to help. And then we all just sit there and watch her struggle. Idk

If punishments worked as much as people preach they do, then why do we have so many ex prisoners reoffending? 🤷🏽‍♀️

that was actually my mom and I won’t lie me and my mom are best friends. She taught me things exactly kind of like how you explained the we stand in front of the street. That’s what she did. I did something stupid when I was a teenager she did take my phone, but she also explained why she took the phone. We had a conversation about what I did was wrong and why I needed the punishmentso I am agreeing with both parties because sometimes you do need punishment and then sometimes you do need an observation or skill building, but that just depends on you and how you want to parent.

im sorry there needs to be an equal balance of both. I dont disagree that you talk to a child about what you want to do, but there needs to be a consequence. a punishment is much better a hospital visit from being hit by car.

one tiktok mom said "it takes discipline to not put your hands on your kids when they're acting up" and that was the phrase transformed my view on disciplining children. it's not supposet to be all about punishments - it's teaching them to act disciplined. and more often than not, teaching a child how to act disciplined doesn't require punishments. guidance, repetition and patience goes a long way.

see, what i'd do, is i'd have my partner/coparent sit by the street with my child, and they'd watch a stuffed animal (not one of theirs) get run over by my car. i'd then get out and bring the stuffy over and show my child the damage, and ask "what if that happened to you?" not a parent but thought i'd share

My dad did natural consequences. He would use logical reasons with every decision and if I didn't listen then he would watch (safely mind you) see what happens when I don't listen. I don't help with cleaning the house suddenly I have no money for fun stuff. i forget my jacket at home then I have to make do (there was always extra supplies in the cars plus Texas doesn't get that cold). My brother and i both realized that when we became adults that we weren't as reckless as our peers because we knew how to do things and what happens when we do stupid things.

I'm learning along with my daughter how to regulate my emotions because I wish my mom had been like that but there was a certain hairbrush in our house if you know what I mean, millennial but raised like a Gen x. singing songs with your kids help them with their speech as well so that's a plus. I am recognizing myself in my daughter and doing what I would have wanted my mother to do with me (singing songs hugs and for our day and age finding a learning video online that covers the subject...and fingers crossed but I am very hopeful that I will have the mother daughter relationship I've always wanted but this time I'm the mom.

i discipline most things but I do punish on a couple of rare things like her trying to play with the fan and her biting, but not bad punishment I warn her a few times then if she doesnt listen she will get put in her travel cot that we have downstairs for her naps as usually if she isnt listening its because she is tired and if I go for a wee while she in there I will come back to her asleep

I was rise in a home that thought spanking or slapping the “disrespect out of the kid was right” I never understood why I was being slapped, but it did teach me one thing, that adults or people with power have the right to hurt you..so my elementary school life was full of a vice principal beating me most school days because I was a “disrespectful little bitch” no I was autistic and was overwhelmed from the student who were bullying me..and now I teach my nieces and nephews how to understand why hitting isn’t nice and hurt the people you care about, and I made a game in road safety as the kids had always loved video games whenever we walked on the sidewalk and made it to a crosswalk we stop acted like we were saving of place in the game by looking both ways and when all cars are gone “game had save” and we can cross the road safely

I've noticed that more authoritarian parents who prefer punishments especially corporal also don't understand that removal from the thing that you like in a non-violent way is still a punishment/consequence. Just because it's not accompanied by physical punishments doesn't mean it's not punishment/consequence. an example of this would be that if your child is hitting another child and they've already been told to stop, removing your child's access to another child and other people is a punishment/consequence. telling your kids that if they can't have gentle hands with other people, then they don't get to interact with other people until they can calm down and use gentle hands is a form of punishment/consequence and directly correlates the thing they're doing with what you're doing to them.
