Megan had always believed that if someone called you their lover, you were supposed to feel special. But with Yoonchae, Megan sometimes wondered if she was even that. They had been together for months. At least, that was what Megan told herself whenever someone asked. “Yoonchae is my girlfriend.” Yet Yoonchae rarely treated her like one. She would text Megan only when she was bored. She would cancel their plans whenever her friends invited her somewhere. When Megan wanted to talk about her day, Yoonchae would barely listen. And whenever Megan tried to hold her hand in public, Yoonchae would casually pull away. “Not here,” Yoonchae would mutter. Megan would force a smile. “Right. Sorry.” She always apologized. Even when she had done nothing wrong. One afternoon, Megan waited outside the school gates with two drinks in her hands. She had remembered Yoonchae's favorite. When Yoonchae finally appeared, she was laughing with her friends. Megan smiled. “Yoonchae!” Yoonchae looked over. “Oh. You're here.” Megan's smile weakened. “I brought you your favorite drink.” Yoonchae took it without saying thank you. Then one of her friends called her. “Yoonchae! Come on!” “Coming.” She turned around immediately. Megan stared after her. “Wait…” Yoonchae stopped. “What?” “Are we still hanging out today?” Yoonchae sighed. “I forgot I already made plans.” “Oh.” Megan looked down. “It's okay.” Yoonchae shrugged. “See you tomorrow.” And she walked away. Megan remained there alone, holding her own untouched drink. That night, Megan finally sent her a message. Megan: Do you actually love me? The message stayed unread. Five minutes. Ten minutes. An hour. Then finally— Yoonchae: Why are you asking something so random? Megan stared at the screen. Megan: Because sometimes I don't feel like your girlfriend. The typing bubble appeared. Disappeared. Appeared again. Then— Yoonchae: You're overthinking. That was all. Megan placed her phone down. Her eyes burned with tears, but she refused to cry. The next morning, Yoonchae acted like nothing happened. She walked beside Megan through the hallway. “Morning.” “Morning.” Megan hesitated. “Yoonchae?” “Hmm?” “What am I to you?” Yoonchae stopped walking. She looked genuinely confused. “What do you mean?” Megan swallowed. “Am I your girlfriend?” “Obviously.” “Then why don't you treat me like one?” Silence. Yoonchae looked away. “I don't know, Megan.” That answer hurt more than anything. Megan nodded slowly. “I think I do.” Yoonchae looked back. “What?” Megan gave her a sad smile. “I think you treat me like I'm less than a lover.” Yoonchae's expression changed. For the first time, she understood. Megan wasn't asking for expensive gifts. She wasn't demanding constant attention. She just wanted to feel chosen. Wanted. Loved. Yoonchae reached for her hand. But Megan stepped back. “I've spent so long trying to convince myself that the little things were enough.” Her voice trembled. “But being someone's girlfriend shouldn't feel like begging to matter.” Yoonchae didn't know what to say. Megan walked away. And for once, Yoonchae was the one left standing there alone. Only then did she realize something terrifying: She had a lover. But she had never made Megan feel loved. #rhia_aus
