In order to get an ao3 account, one should watch the entirety of Star Trek: The original series, Supernatural, Sherlock, and Hannibal….. those are the foundations of fanfic

Also supernatural, because it’s the (I believe) the sole reason ao3 was made or at least the inspiration

I really think the people who say 'but reading about something normalizes it in your brain so you're more likely to do it' already have those desires, and are just blaming fiction. people who watch murder shows who go to commit murder, were already going to commit murder

Unfortunately I've seen too many people who claim to be huge fans of the show, but argue that they're "not like those freaks" because the show is just violence and nothing sexual... So I guess they didn't watch it, or they're lying, because even setting aside all the ways violence is pretty routinely eroticised in the show (that's one of the things that makes it great, it's one of the strongest elements of Will's relationship to his queerness), like... what do these people think happened with Mason?

I watched Hannibal because of Hannibal fanfiction. To this day, I think it is the fandom that has the best written fanfics out there, precisely because it calls for more media literacy to enjoy it AND write about it.

I’ll even let them pass with Dexter, if they prefer. I am someone who has read a lot of really disturbing fiction in my day— but Dexter specifically made my skin crawl. (Something about that specific actor, his cadence/voice in the narration? It was like American Psycho but without the satirical absurdity that made that movie… almost “fun”.) But being in the “bad guy’s” head, feeling that, sometimes even finding yourself *rooting* for him… I feel like that’s something some of these folks need to sit with.

If NBC’s Hannibal was an A03 story, they would complain about Freddie Lounds and not realize that she’s the main friction for most of the story

I do not agree with your point but I think it was said very intelligently which I appreciate because a lot of these conversations are venom from both sides. I often see the argument as simply “fiction does not effect reality” which I couldn’t understand because I have such a deep connection to fiction and I think the point of writing is to impact people’s hearts and minds. Particularly with fanfiction being one of the most emotionally genres. I always saw the idea that fanfiction couldn’t have an impact on reality as a disrespect to the genre because “well its not the same as To Kill A Mocking Bird or Notes On An Execution or any real book making real change” the idea that its a respect to the genre because it is someone assuming the writer is intelligent enough to not agree with everything their character says is a much more charitable one and one of the first arguments for “proshipping” (for lack of a better term) that I actually sympathize with. However I do not think that is most cases. There are very intelligent works on Ao3 that use inc*st or child/adult works as metaphors or showing how cruel and destructive those relationships can be but I do not think that is the majority of these works. Just from experience (I read things I don’t like to try and understand that perspective but I do not comment negatively or at all or any of that) most of the time the relationship is shown in a positive light and is not a metaphor, a metaphor has to have something it represents and some indication of that, the way Hannibal is about repressed desires. It is often clear by authors notes or comments that the people writing CSAM are “getting off” on it. It is supposed to be romantic or hot and I do not think it should be. I would really like to DM you and talk about this more if it is something you are interested in? As I said I haven’t seen any other discussions about this where your side made sense to me
