@dr_mikem: The number one way to stop being a reactive parent. The yell that’s out of your mouth before your brain catches up? That’s not a character flaw. That’s your nervous system reacting faster than you can think. The fix isn’t a technique or a perfect script. It’s a pause. One breath. One second of space between what your child does and what you do next - just enough to get your thinking brain back online. And every time you pause instead of react, your child is learning to do the same. They don’t learn regulation from what we say. They learn it from us You’ve got this!!

I take a deep breath and then yell and then I apologize.

I just had an entire moment yesterday on how I wanted to be better at not being reactive. I hate myself every single time I react. I want to be different for my child.

This is so hard when my 4 and 2 yr old are constantly fighting, hitting each other, pushing, etc. 😩

I know as a man you probably can’t relate, but I have a really hard time in my luteal phase. I can be perfectly calm the rest of the month, but am so mean and reactive for 1.5 - 2 weeks because I’m in a perpetual state of hormonal, emotional distress.

Something I will add, tryyy to get more sleep as a parent. I 100% notice that when I don’t sleep well my patience is much thinner. Losing sleep especially if you’re already stressed is a huge trigger for me to snap at my kids quicker. I do try to apologize and talk to my kids when I know I’ve messed up too

If you know, you know :
I also heard when you feel it say, “brb” and go to the bathroom and wash your hands. It gives you a minute to cool down and seeing your reflection may give you pause.

I’m such an angry mom sometimes but I love my kids deeply and my heart shatters after the reaction and I see the look on their faces. We are a neurodivergent household and pausing is the hardest thing for me. I cry every night hoping I’m not damaging them too much.

My kids are sleeping right now. It’s 930 at night and this video came across my FYP and I just wanna say that I was definitely for a reason. Thank you for reminding me. I have two boys who I had 11 months apart they are five years old and four years old and I have a 13 month old and I yell more than I like to admit, but it’s not out of anger. It’s just out of frustration. I needed this.🙏🏻😭 I just wanna be the best mom ever they adore me and I adore them.

growing up we weren't allowed to be loud when my father was home. now when my girls get too loud, I automatically become anxious and irritated. wild how that works

As someone in the child dev/human dev field, it is an incredibly hard skill to maintain. It’s FINALLY becoming a commonly used tool for me. I’ve also been doing some steady work on myself. It is possible to change your parenting techniques if you feel it’s impossible 🤍

Of course I’m seeing this AFTER not taking that one second pause 😩😩 Whew… motherhood/parenthood is really not for the weak. Sometimes that pause is EVERYTHING. 😭
