This is a mouth watering fantasy fight between my all time favourite boxer, Serik Sapiyev, and someone who ranks in my top 10, Héctor Vinent. After stopping Duvergel in '92, Vinent’s destructive run began, defeating world class opponents on his way to multiple national and international honours, including back to back Olympic and World golds in the light welterweight division. From '92 to '96, Vinent was near unbeatable, often finishing fights by stoppage or dominating with such wide margins highlighting his brilliance in the ring; speed, aggression, power, defensive prowess and ring IQ. But tall or aggressive southpaws like Dzinziruk and Crucce did manage to get the better of him or cause him problems, and that’s exactly what Sapiyev brings to the table. Sapiyev, known for one of the most unique and unpredictable styles in boxing, was fast, aggressive, and so fluid on his feet. He was always moving in and out of range, throwing punches whilst moving, countering at the same time his opponent throws, making it nearly impossible for opponents to adjust. Most people know him for his performances at the 2012 London Olympics, where he won the welterweight gold and the Val Barker Trophy, but Sapiyev was already a force at light welterweight, with back to back World Championship golds in '05 and '07. This fight’s a tough one to call. While I admire Sapiyev and know Vinent struggled against certain southpaws, I’m leaning slightly towards Vinent, especially when comparing his 92-96 form to Sapiyev’s 05-07 version. After moving to welterweight and with the scoring change, Sapiyev’s attacks became more refined. In his 05-07 run, he often overwhelmed opponents with speed and volume, despite being open to hits. Vinent, though, had power in both hands, which might’ve been the edge. Although Sapiyev won two World golds at light welterweight, I’ve always thought he was a better welterweight. It’s a 50/50 pick, though, and either could win. One thing’s for sure; it would’ve been an exciting fight. Who do you think wins and why? 🎥Taylor O'Higgins YT (give him a follow) #olympicboxing #cuba #olympics #boxinghistory #boxing🥊 #boxingmotivation #amateurboxing #boxingcoach #boxeo #boxeocubano #boxinglife #boxingkazakhstan
