I don't think I've ever done a lot of filler, but my dm likes to run "Christmas specials" for us during the Christmas season, as in the party going to sleep and having a collective nightmare about a holiday themed dungeon and enemies, then waking up with Christmas presents/the rewards we got from said dungeon

There’s no such thing as a filler D&D session, only DMs who haven’t made downtime feel like it matters. Roleplay and slow scenes aren’t the break from the story, they’re where players actually live in the world you built. 💜

People focusing on getting the deck out to miss the point that a DM is in charge of the story and purposefully holding that up bc you want to and no one else does is the problem. Kicking out that player will likely result in the dissolution of the campaign and end up an mtg pod at someone else's house and that's from someone that DMs regularly, it's not about just you

my group is currently in an archipelago related to a specific players backstory. they didnt make it to one session, so we did a “filler” session on the islands. We proceeded to get arrested, one of us got a lamia girlfriend, and then we saved a town from being bombed by a giant moth robot. They all turned out to be crucial plotpoints later on

nonono you don't understand. sometimes the game is so good you accidentally make the filler yourself by arguing in a cell for 4 hours. there is no such thing as filler, only downtime to flesh out characters.

if the dm didnt wanna do filler, theyd find a way to work around the missing person (if it's a matter of them being suddenly unable to attend) or just. ignore the missing one (if they genuinely just didnt bother with a commitment)
