RD here. If you eat foods that have both iron and calcium in them, the iron gets blocked as they fight for the same absorption site and calcium is absorbed because it is needed everywhere in the body (this doesn’t mean iron isn’t important). This doesn’t matter if it’s supplemented or via food because if you think about it, they’re both coming from an oral source and being absorbed at the same site. The difference being that if you’re going to take an iron supplement, you can’t have calcium or calcium-rich foods within two hours before or after taking the supplement. Also, food has a better absorption rate than supplements. You could have calcium rich foods if you were getting IV iron because then they wouldn’t be competing for the same absorption site.

I grew up in a lower income area and my home-ec teacher had a week lesson dedicated to cereal. We had a cereal buffet one day where she had us try different cereal/yogurt combos to add protein. I didn’t understand why until I was much older. Bless her

Sadly any kind of cereal makes me sick. It plummets my blood sugar because of reactive hypoglycemia. I’d love a good way to easily up my iron.

Daily reminder for everybody that nutritionists are not regulated and certified like dietitians and any bum can call themselves a nutritionist
