@thegreatcorrection: China just finished phase one of a man-made island at Antelope Reef. By AMTI's count it is now likely the largest island in the South China Sea. Beijing says the Xisha Islands are inherent Chinese territory with no dispute. Hanoi says any activity there is completely illegal and invalid. Both, in their own words. Everyone reaches for the 2016 ruling. It covered Scarborough Shoal and the Spratlys — no Paracel feature was ever in it. And no court can decide who owns them: the Law of the Sea rules on water, not land, and an ICJ case would need China to agree. So who should decide who owns the Paracels? #southchinasea #china #vietnam #geopolitics #paracels #maritime #explained
