The first clue is impossible to miss: the husband has a black eye. Then Rockwell gives us another detail. One of his wife’s fingers is bandaged. Are the injuries connected? Rockwell never tells us. Her expression makes the mystery even better. She looks toward her husband, and the corner of her mouth appears slightly raised. A tiny pin resembling a samurai warrior is attached to her clothing, another detail that has been interpreted as part of Rockwell’s joke. But none of this proves what happened. That is what makes the painting so clever. Rockwell places us near the counselor’s viewpoint, so before the real counselor has even spoken to them, we are already examining the evidence and judging the couple ourselves. Rockwell developed the scene through at least seventy photographic studies, meaning this apparently spontaneous moment was carefully constructed. The black eye. The bandage. The gaze. The almost-smile. Everything encourages us to solve a story Rockwell deliberately refuses to finish. Did she give him that black eye, or are we judging her too quickly?
