The argument “But what if someone powerful eventually comes along and attacks them?” completely misses the point of anarchism. That person isn’t some supernatural being who can defeat millions of people alone. In order to exercise power and wage wars, they ultimately need other people to act and fight for them. That’s exactly what’s so destructive about systems of power: people are organized and controlled so that they can be used to control or fight other people. If people instead lived as free communities without rulers or hierarchies and decided collectively how they wanted to live, you would remove the foundation that allows that kind of power to exist in the first place. So saying “people wouldn’t be protected” already assumes that there has to be some central authority protecting them. But questioning that dependence on authority is precisely what anarchism is about.
