@_de_la_flor: So apparently it’s time for a little lesson on STOOP CULTURE. Because what some of you call “ghetto,” “trashy,” or “why don’t they sit in the backyard?” has an entire cultural and historical context you clearly never learned. Stoop culture exists because, historically, many Black, Latino, immigrant, and working-class families lived in neighborhoods where community happened OUT FRONT. On the stoop. On the porch. In the driveway. On the sidewalk. In the front yard. People lived in smaller homes and denser neighborhoods. Air conditioning wasn’t always available. Private outdoor space wasn’t guaranteed. And families often lived surrounded by relatives, friends, and neighbors they actually interacted with. So you went outside. Grandma sat on the porch. The kids played where everybody could see them. Someone brought out food. Music was playing. Neighbors stopped to talk. Someone yelled to somebody three houses down. Everybody knew whose kid belonged to whom. And somebody’s auntie knew EVERYTHING happening on that block. 😂 The stoop wasn’t just somewhere to sit. It was a gathering place. It was community surveillance before Ring cameras. It was childcare before everybody needed a scheduled playdate. It was social connection before group chats. It was how neighbors exchanged information, watched out for each other, rested after work, shared food, told stories, argued, laughed, flirted, played music, and EXISTED together. And yes, there are cultural and class differences in how outdoor space is used. Some people were raised believing the backyard is where family life happens and the front yard is supposed to remain pristine and mostly decorative. Other people were raised where the whole damn block felt like an extension of the living room. Neither one is inherently superior. But calling one of them “trashy” because it doesn’t resemble your version of respectable suburban living? That deserves some examination. Because sometimes when people say: “That looks ghetto.” What they really mean is: “That looks like a way of living associated with people I was taught to look down on.” My family sitting outside laughing, talking, eating, watching the kids, greeting people and enjoying our home isn’t something I’m embarrassed about. You see a front yard. I see a stoop. You see people “hanging around.” I see family. Community. Connection. Some of y’all spent so much money buying houses with front porches just to use them as decoration. BABY, WE’RE GONNA SIT ON OURS. 😂 The backyard is private. The stoop is community. And if our joy bothers you from all the way over there… Imagine how loud we are in person. 😂 #stoop #latinos #family #familia #fyp

I’m sorry, it’s “ghetto” for a family to sit out together and watch the world go by? People are rude. Enjoy your sweet family and life. 💖

You should be able to hang out wherever you please. The concept of judging people based on where they hang out is wiiiild.

I think it’s wild how this has disappeared. Someone called the city code enforcement on me for having a small sandbox and a bouncy ball in the front yard. When did we stop playing outside? Being outside? This is how community parenting stopped, and we need it more now than we ever did.

I have a front patio and a back patio. Just depends on my mood if I’m feeling social, I sit up front. If not, I sit in the back. 😂
