i live in indiana and it feels like a wreck here, when factories left here it ruined my city as well and many people here just can not get a job better than like fast food or something unless they have a really good degree (and the education here sucks!)

It’s important for people to know that while Gary itself has had its own problems with local government mismanagement, State government has been the biggest obstacle to Gary thriving. The state of Indiana is corrupt and evil, and doesn’t gaf about Hoosiers

redlining was definitely a HUGE factor but whites didn't initially choose to leave because the jobs did, there was ***massive*** white flight when Mayor Hatcher was elected

I was driving across the country once and randomly stopped in Gary to get gas. It has amazing old architecture. It should be a thriving city right there on the water like Chicago, but I guess racism fucks up every that’s good.

It’s sad to see so many poor communities going through the these same cycles of political abuse as climate disasters are worsening. Wish lived closer and could help, and I wish I had more influence in my community to prevent our own defunding 😭

I’m 25 y/o from Gary & my elementary school shut down while I was still in school they literally had no plan for us & each year more & more schools have shut down
