@whoknowss6675: They had been together for four years. Four years of quiet mornings, shared umbrellas, whispered "I love yous" before sleep. Karina was Winter’s whole world — her first love, her safe place, the person she thought she’d grow old with. Winter noticed the changes first. Karina came home later. Her smiles didn’t reach her eyes anymore. She stopped holding Winter’s hand when they walked. When Winter tried to ask, Karina would just shake her head and say, "I’m just tired, love. Work has been hard." Winter believed her. She always did. She made Karina tea every night. Left sticky notes on the fridge telling her how proud she was. Woke up an hour early just to make her favorite breakfast. If I love her enough, Winter told herself, she’ll come back to me. She didn’t know Karina was already gone. --- It was raining. The same kind of rain that used to make them dance in the kitchen. Winter was sitting on the couch, waiting. It was 2 AM when Karina came in — wet, cold, and already holding her coat like she was leaving again. "Where were you?" Winter asked softly, standing up. Her voice was shaking. "I was worried." Karina didn’t look at her. She walked straight to the closet and pulled out a suitcase. "I can’t do this anymore, Winter." Winter’s heart stopped. "Do… do what?" "This. Us." Karina’s voice was flat, empty. "I don’t love you. Not like that. Not anymore." It felt like the floor had fallen out beneath Winter. "But… yesterday you held me and said—" "I was lying." Karina turned around, and her eyes were dry. No tears. No regret. "I stayed out of pity, okay? I felt bad. But it’s not fair to either of us. I’m leaving." "Why?" Winter whispered, tears spilling over. "What did I do? Tell me, I’ll fix it—" "You didn’t do anything." Karina zipped the bag shut. "That’s the problem. It’s me. I fell out of love. And there’s nothing you can do about it." She walked to the door. Winter reached out, grabbed her wrist, desperate, please don’t go, but Karina pulled away like Winter burned her. "Don’t." Karina’s voice was cold. "Let me go." "Karina, please—" "I said let go!" Karina shouted, and for the first time, she looked angry. "You’re suffocating me! Every day, every text, every look — it’s too much! I don’t want you! I never really did!" Winter dropped her hand. Those words hit harder than any blow. Never really did. Four years. All of it — just nothing. Karina stepped out into the rain. Didn’t look back. Not even once. The apartment became a graveyard. Every corner held a memory. The mug Karina used every morning. The hoodie she left behind. The mark on the pillow where her head used to rest. Winter couldn’t sleep. Couldn’t eat. She kept checking her phone, waiting for a text, a call, anything that said Karina made a mistake. It never came. Three months passed. Winter saw them once — across the café. Karina was laughing. Holding hands with someone else. That smile — the bright, real one — she used to save it only for Winter. Now she gave it away like it meant nothing. Winter stood there, watching, until her chest hurt so bad she could barely breathe. She didn’t approach. She just turned around and walked away, heart breaking all over again. --- Six months later. A knock on Winter’s door. It was Giselle. She looked pale, like she’d been carrying a heavy secret. "Winter…" Giselle’s voice broke. "I’m so sorry." "What for?" Winter said quietly. "She chose someone else. I get it." Giselle shook her head, tears falling. "No. She didn’t. She never stopped loving you. Not for a second." Winter froze. "What?" "Where is she?" ___ "She’s been in the hospital this whole time. She made us promise not to tell you. She said — ‘If she comes, I won’t be able to let her go.’" ___ Winter ran.
