@60minutes: Lyme disease affects nearly half a million Americans annually. The CDC says the disease is emerging beyond regions where it has historically been considered endemic. High school students from Lambert High School in suburban Atlanta may have just found a new way to detect and treat it using the revolutionary gene-editing technique known as CRISPR, Bill Whitaker reported in 2025. The students targeted specific DNA strands, snip away the obstructing DNA, and expose the protein, enabling them to detect it with a simple, kit-style test, like a COVID or pregnancy strip. #lymedisease #ticks #innovation

My dad got Lyme disease back in 2019. He knew he had it, but doctors never treated him. He even had a heart attack and two widow makers cause of lyme, and doctors wouldn’t help him. It’s amazing to see students try and find a cure for this horrible disease.

Regardless of whether or not this is successful, this is truly impressive. It is this kind of thinking that will make a difference in the future. I think it also helps that at their age they have a safety net, so they are willing to take risks adults who need the health insurance, paycheck etc might not take.

This is huge. My greatest concern when outside is ticks. I know so many folks with crazy long term issues related to Lyme.

Absolutely amazing! I hope more young people will get involved in the sciences. We need to welcome their fresh perspective and encourage them to think outside of the box. Congratulations to these incredible young people. ❤️
