The Heavenly King is confronted from every direction — religion, politics, theology, and law. What appears to be sincere questioning is, in reality, calculated entrapment. Yet every attempt to corner Him only exposes the weakness of His challengers. IV. Tested by the Pharisees and the Herodians (vv. 15–22) An unlikely alliance forms. The Pharisees — strict religious traditionalists. The Herodians — political loyalists aligned with Rome. Normally opposed, they unite against one Man. Their question is a political trap: “Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar, or not?” If He supports taxation, He alienates the Jewish populace. If He rejects it, He can be charged with rebellion. But He asks for a denarius — and they produce it. By carrying Caesar’s coin, they already acknowledge Caesar’s rule. Then comes the decisive statement: “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” In one sentence, He establishes the distinction between civil authority and divine authority. Government has its sphere. God has His. Earthly administration does not cancel heavenly sovereignty. They leave silenced. V. Tested by the Sadducees (vv. 23–33) The Sadducees step forward — theological rationalists. According to Acts of the Apostles 23:8, they denied resurrection, angels, and spirits. They construct a hypothetical scenario involving a woman who married seven brothers and ask: “In the resurrection, whose wife will she be?” It sounds sophisticated — but it assumes resurrection is merely an extension of earthly life.
