how about using the guy who knows a guy to advertise your achievements and credentials to potential opportunities rather than trying to have your network work for you and hand you said opportunities on a gold platter. the question of either "knowing a guy" or "getting a degree" is a fallacy. knowing a guy should be a tool to link you to places your experience and credentials are needed, not a fast track up the ladder that substitutes hard work and earning credentials, although sometimes it does through corruption and nepotism.
