What began as an administrative technology for recording grain, livestock and rations evolved into cuneiform, a medium through which Mesopotamians recorded literature, law, religion, mathematics and political life. Sumer did not merely produce writing, it helped create the institutional machinery of civilisation itself, cities, bureaucracy, organised administration and systems for preserving knowledge beyond individual memory. From these foundations emerged later Mesopotamian powers such as Akkad, Babylon and Assyria.
