Some of the hardest conversations families will ever have are the ones they keep putting off. And after 17 years in assisted living, I've seen what can happen when families wait until a crisis to ask the important questions. Nobody wants to sit across from someone they love and talk about illness, losing independence, or the possibility of not being able to make their own decisions. I understand that. But here's something I've learned from 17 years of working with families in assisted living. Sometimes, when a crisis happens, everybody wants to do what's best. The daughter has an opinion. The son has another. The spouse believes something different. And somewhere in the middle of all those opinions is the one voice that matters most. The voice of the person everyone is trying to protect. That's why these conversations matter. Not because something terrible is about to happen. Not because we're giving up on someone. But because we love them enough to ask what THEY want while they can still tell us And here's something else I've learned. A difficult conversation today may prevent a painful disagreement tomorrow. Families don't have to agree on everything. But they should understand what their loved one wants. That's where preparation begins. ❤️ After 17 years, I believe one of the greatest gifts we can give someone is the opportunity to have their wishes heard and respected. Families, let me ask you something: Have you had this conversation with your loved ones, or is it still one of those conversations everybody keeps putting off? There's no judgment here. Let's talk. #caregiverburnout #caregiverselfcare #FollowMeAcrossTheBridge #AssistedLiving #HealingForCaregivers
