He’s a kid. His primary goal is to be proven correct and Tim isn’t trying to disprove anything he believes. He’s actually confirming it. A seasoned person would’ve used this time to gather as much information as possible on Who are these white nationalists? What is their plan? And how do they plan on executing said plan? Where is their base? And how far along are they in their plan?
