Saying all people with ED’s are fatphobic is an inaccurate generalization. ED’s are complex mental illnesses, not a belief system. While some individuals with ED’s may hold fatphobic beliefs because they’ve internalized societal messages, many do not. For a lot of us, the illness is driven by things like anxiety, OCD, perfectionism, trauma, autism, a need for control, or an intense fear of eating, weight gain, or losing control over our own bodies.. not hatred or judgment toward other people’s bodies. Would you say all obese people are skinny phobic? No, you wouldn’t, although a lot of the reasoning, trauma and behaviors that cause obesity are the same exact reasons that cause anorexia. They just show up physically, differently. You can absolutely challenge diet culture and support body diversity while still living with anorexia. Reducing an entire psychiatric illness to “fatphobia” ignores decades of research and dismisses the experiences of countless people whose illness has nothing to do with judging others.
