And what’s even more surprising is when the signing service was started by someone who has actually worked as a notary. You already know what goes into completing these assignments. Let’s talk about what that $60 may have to cover: Printing a potentially large loan package—sometimes two copies. Printer, toner, paper and equipment. Travel to and from the appointment. Gas, mileage and vehicle expenses. 30–90+ minutes at the signing table depending on the package. Possible scanbacks. Travel to FedEx or UPS. Administrative time, communication and follow-up. Business insurance, supplies and taxes. That $60 is gross revenue—not $60 in your pocket. Every notary has to determine what assignments make financial sense for their own business, but know your numbers before accepting a fee. Being available doesn’t mean being unprofitable. And being a new Loan Signing Agent doesn’t mean you have to automatically accept every low-paying assignment just to gain experience. Your commission has value. Your time has value.
