Thanks for the thoughtful response! What you describe, learned pronunciation, happened with the Arabic word "Layla" in Persian, which became Layli, because the Perso-Arabic alphabet mostly dropped the alef maqsura, my argument is that Layli is just now a Persian word, in the same way that the "wrong" country name pronunciations are new American English words, even if in the variety of English that is spoken in the country of origin, it is a wrong pronunciation. Fascinating discussion and sorry if I came off as harsh in the original video!

You are literally proving his point, and negating your own point. The whole point of your original video is that, according to you, MANY people are saying it “wrong.” And obviously here you’re clarifying that when a large number of people say it a certain way, even if it’s not the “original” or “correct” pronunciation, it becomes and acceptable one based on how widely it’s used.

Personally I would argue Niger is endo/exo because the sound you make to pronounce it isn’t present in English, it’s a borrowed sound. I think Dominica is a language difference and therefore acceptable. He uses tomato as an example, said differently in different countries, so I don’t think it’s unreasonable to say that there is a wrong spelling especially given they speak a variation of English known as pigeon English, I therefore think it’s ok to not say it how he is telling us to
Only US citizens calls Iraq eye-raq, not most people.

Except the pronunciation of Niger that you labeled as “incorrect” is listed as the standard pronunciation in both Merriam-Webster and Oxford dictionaries. There is only one (the correct one) listed for “epitome”.
