This verse gets misquoted all the time. This is what it means: The Hebrew word “hated” is sane’ (שָׂנֵא). In Hebrew idiom, “love” and “hate” often function as a contrast pair meaning “chosen” versus “not chosen” or “preferred” versus “set aside” not emotional hatred in the way we’d use the word today.

Saying God manifested hate is just not right, so bless those who find this “inspirational “

God’s statement “Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated” can sound harsh if we read “hate” only in the modern emotional sense. The context of Malachi 1:2–3 and Romans 9:10–13 helps explain it.
1. God chose Jacob before either brother had done anything
In Romans 9, Paul specifically points this out. Rebekah was pregnant with Jacob and Esau, and before they were born or had done good or evil, God declared:
“The elder shall serve the younger.” Romans 9:12
Then Paul adds:
“Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.” Romans 9:13
So Paul isn’t saying, “Jacob behaved better, therefore God loved him.” Jacob himself had serious faults. Paul’s point is that God’s covenant purpose depended upon God’s calling rather than human merit.

you got it wrong, during that time, love and hate means a contrast between lineage, God choses Jacob, not Esau, but God did not hate Esau personally, He even blessed him. This quote from Malachi 1:2–3 and Romans 9:13 refers to divine election and sovereign choice, not personal hatred for an individual.
In Hebrew poetic language, "love" and "hate" are used contrastingly to mean "chosen" and "rejected." The statement describes God choosing Jacob's lineage (the Israelites) to carry out His covenantal promise and redemptive plan for humanity, while passing over Esau's lineage (the Edomites).
In Romans, Paul uses this phrasing to emphasize that God’s salvation plan relies entirely on His grace and sovereign purpose rather than human merit or birth order, as Esau was actually the firstborn twin.

That’s not how that verse was meant to be interpreted. He doesn’t hate Esau. The word hate in its original translation, translates to loves less. God doesn’t not hate his creation. He hates what we do. He doesn’t hate us. L

HATE?? That's crazy! 😭 It's important to read Scripture and not read into Scripture the best way for this inviting the Holy Spirit when you read the bible because you'll receive revelation, and the true nature of Yaweh will be revealed. Jacob and Esau were always destined for different way of life. The bible focuses on Jacob because through him the promise made to Abraham was fulfilled and Esau wasn't part of that but that's doesn’t mean or equal to Hate!

well I read somewhere, that kind of grammar is not actually A feeling, it's a idiomatic expression of choosing. God choose Jacob that's all. It's not about the feeling of hating esau.

@Cass: Also God still blessed Esau with wealth, land (Mount Seir), and powerful descendants (the Edomites). He did not hate him. God also worked on his heart. He wanted to kill Jacob but when the brothers met again in Genesis 33, Esau greeted Jacob with warmth and forgiveness, showing that God's plan did not mean Esau lacked personal material blessings or human capacity for grace. He changed them both. He just chose Jacob but a specific purpose. Look up the Greek translation for that verse that God loved Jacob but hated Esau… the pastor is assuming just because it wasn’t written that God didn’t work on Esau.. God loves us ALL no one is hated by the lord and he would never want his child to believe that. Please don’t misinform people ! This could drive people to shame and isolation and away from Christ . Christ loves us all so deeply
